Dan Brandon Bilzerian was born on December 7, 1980, in Tampa, Florida, to corporate takeover specialists Paul Bilzerian and Terri Steffen. He has a younger brother, Adam Bilzerian, who also plays poker. Dan and all of his family members are said to have a very high intelligence quotient. He is of Armenian ethnicity on his father’s side and his family was blessed to be among half of those who escaped death in the Armenian Genocide.
Dan was always a rich kid. Born to a father who made big money as a corporate raider on Wall Street, Dan grew up in wealth. The Bilzerian family lived in an 11-bedroom mansion in Tampa Florida. Believed to be about half the size of Buckingham Palace, the house featured a swimming pool with a slide, an indoor basketball court, a mountain of imported volcanic rock, and a batting cage.

Confused about what to do next, Dan joined the Navy and began training to become a SEAL. However, like three-quarters of the trainees, Dan never made it to the end of the program. He was honorably discharged and received a $6,000-a-month disability allowance, which he enrolled in at the University of Florida, where he studied business and criminology.
In college, Bilzerian started playing poker. While at university, Dan succumbed to pressure from the government to liquidate a third of his trust funds in order to get his father out of jail. However, he went bankrupt in his second year with only $750 left to liquidate his assets. Thanks to poker, Dan will win $10,000, then $187,000 in Las Vegas.

Paul Bilzerian’s life as a young man matched that of his son Dan. A young delinquent, Paul dropped out of high school after being reprimanded for violating the school uniform by wearing jeans. However, after serving in the Vietnam War, where he won a Gallantry Cross, a Bronze Star Medal and an Army Commendation Medal, his life turned around.

Dan’s father, Paul Bilzerian, enjoyed wealth in Tony Avila’s Tampa community until 1989 when he was convicted of stock fraud. Most of his wrongdoings had to do with the classic operations of investing heavily in publicly traded companies, only to then launch hostile takeover attempts.
Known for his bushy mustache turned white, Paul was sentenced to four years in prison but only served 13 months, with the rest under house arrest.
