Robert William Flay was born on December 10, 1964 in New York City. His father’s name is Bill while his mother’s name is Dorothy. Flay grew up in Manhattan and was fascinated with cooking from a young age. As an eight-year-old, the future celebrity chef asked his father for a toy oven as a Christmas present. However, his father believed a GI Joe would be a more appropriate gift, but young Flay stuck to his guns and eventually received both items. Flay continued to nurture his passion for cooking throughout his college years and dropped out during his junior year of high school to pursue his calling. In the beginning he worked in various eateries, including a pizzeria and an ice cream parlour. He later moved to the Joe Allen Restaurant in Manhattan, where he worked as a salad chef. While at Joe Allen, Flay impressed the owner with his skills and his associate decided to sponsor him to attend a class at the French Culinary Institute in New York. Flay rewarded his benefactor by producing the most distinguished graduate in his class.

After graduating, Bobby Flay honed his skills as a sous chef at various New York restaurants such as Bud and Jams. All that hard work paid off in 1991 when he was appointed Executive Chef at Mesa Grill NYC. He spent just one year at the Mesa Grill before it was named Restaurant of the Year in 1992. Since that impressive accomplishment, Bobby Flay has opened two more Mesa Grill restaurants. in Las Vegas and Nassau, Bahamas. The New York native has also opened other restaurants such as Bar Americain and Bobby’s Burger Palace. Bobby’s Burger Palace is a chain of casual burger restaurants where customers can add potato chips to any burger. The outfit also offers milkshakes with or without alcohol.
